Taking A Chance
May 2013 is going to be a big month for UpDown Press and Bindery. Why, you ask? Because this month we are publishing Linda Crosfield’s poem “Take A Chance” as a beautiful little accordion book! We feel like proud parents! It has been an awesome experience to work with someone else’s writing to create a brand new book.
This amazing poem arrived in my inbox a few months ago when Linda and I were paired up for the awesome online journal, The Light Ekphrastic. I began working with her poem “Take A Chance” right away, because it is a poem that makes a 90 degree turn right in the middle and marches back on itself, and I knew it needed to be an accordion book (there that form is again!). As I continued to play around with the poem, I realized I wanted to make this book in a larger edition so that more people could experience it. But that demanded more time than I had to work on my book for TLE, and so I turned to another of Linda’s poem and began working on the lung book.
So, I put “Take A Chance” down for a few weeks, but came back to it whenever time allowed, making mock-ups and messing with designs. I wrote to Linda explaining my plans, and she graciously agreed to let me borrow her words for my art. And I’ve been working on it ever since, through teaching and working and tripping to New York. But at long last, the end is in sight!
I am currently putting the finishing touches on all 25 of these books (and you can see more photos of them here…), and do you know what that means? It means you can have one of these wonderful books all for your very own self. We have 20 copies available for sale through that fancy little PayPal button down there (the fine print: we’ll ship the books as they are completed, and anticipate having all of them finished by mid-May):
We’re hoping you’ll take one home with you! We know it would love a spot on one of your bookshelves. And the proceeds? Well, those will go into making even more wonderful books. We’re already looking for our next project…
